In this course, students will both read and write poetry. We will study some of the greatest poems ever written, from the epic poems of France and Italy to the odes and sonnets of England to the free verse scribbling of the 20th century. This course is designed to introduce you to some of the basics of poetry. After taking this course you’ll know the basic elements of poetry, important types of poems, and have studied some of the greatest poems ever written. We’ll canvass many different forms of poems from many different time periods. Each lesson will hone in on close readings of the best examples, so we can give them the concentration they deserve. By the course’s end, you’ll remember what you like about poetry and you will be able to speak intelligently about a poem. This class will also take part in several written and spoken poetry contests, including Poetry Out Loud.
"A poem can have an impact, but you can't expect an audience to understand all the nuances." Douglas Dunn
